چکیده

Introduction: The topography of Mars is a key parameter for the understanding of the geological evolution of the planet [1]. Topographic data for most applications are represented as Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). DEMs are characterized by their spatial resolution (distance between neighbor points on the topographic grid) and the accuracy of elevations. The resolution and accuracy required depend on the geological applications from the global evolution of the whole planets to the study of small structures such as impact craters [2] or grabens [3,4]. DEMs of Mars at the local scale were mainly derived by stereophotogrammetric method during the Viking era [5]. High Topographic profiles have been recently acquired by Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) launched in the frame of Mars Global Surveyor mission in 1997. In this paper we describe how to generate DEM’s through an interactive Internet application.

Gridding Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter data with GMT: effects of pixel size and interpolation methods on DEM integrity

High-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) based on Mars orbiter laser altimeter (MOLA) data provide geospatial characterizations of Martian topography. MOLA range data are essentially two-dimensional topographic profiles. Transforming these profile data into three-dimensional DEMs requires the interpolation of a continuous surface between MOLA observations. To this end, we outline a metho...

Technical Note An evaluation of interpolation methods for Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data

The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) instrument on the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft has returned a large amount of data on the topography of Mars. It is possible to generate high resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) from these data by employing data interpolation techniques. Four interpolation algorithms were selected for testing on MOLA data: Delaunay-based linear interpolati...

The Effect of Resolution on Scaling Relations and Concavity on Valley Networks on Mars

Valley networks have been observed on Mars since the Viking orbiter took photos in 19761980. They are interpreted as an erosional record of a warmer, wetter Mars then what currently exists. Scaling relationships have been used to evaluate terrestrial streams and can be used on Mars. Results from these relationships can provide insight into the mechanisms that formed the valley networks. These r...

Limits on inference of Mars small-scale topography from MOLA data

[i] The surface roughness of Mars at scales from ~ 1-200 m is of interest for lander hazard and radar-sounder clutter analysis, but MOLA data are the only current source of global topographic information. We use synthetic fractal profiles to determine the uncertainties associated with deriving self-affine statistics irom detrended segments of MOLA tracks. The mean Hurst exponent derived from su...

Extension across Valles Marineris and the Thaumasia “rift”, Mars

We calculate the amount of crustal stretching across the Valles Marineris and a large graben structure in the western Thaumasia region (the “Thaumasia graben” [1,2]). We measure vertical offsets in a set of transects using data obtained by the MOLA laser altimeter. Assuming a fault dip angle of 60°, correcting for landslide deposits, but ignoring other sediment cover, we obtain extension values...
